Citrine is a macrocrystalline form of quartz, as are amethyst, aventurine and rose quartz. Natural Citrine is rare and therefore most Citrine being sold is heat-treated Amethyst or Smoky Quartz which turns a golden color at high temperatures. Heat-treated Citrine is more affordable and accessible, but does have a slight reddish tint that distinguishes it from natural Citrine.
Citrine gets its name from the Latin word citrina because of its light yellow lemon-like color, which comes from the presence of iron. It is also known as the “sun stone”, (not to be confused with Sunstone). In antiquity, it was thought to hold sunlight and was associated with gold. It was believed to attract wealth, protect from snake bites, and improve communication. The Romans associated it with Mercury (Greek equivalent Hermes).
Citrine is also sometimes known as the “success stone”, “merchant’s stone” and “money stone” because of its usefulness in prosperity spells. It is also believed to bring happiness, light-heartedness, and vitality to those who carry them.
Citrine is associated with the Solar Plexus Chakra, which governs will and self-esteem.
