The Green Carnation was popularized as a symbol of queerness by Victorian writer Oscar Wilde. Wilde encouraged gay men, dandies and aesthetics to wear the dyed carnations on their lapels to signal they were a part of this underground coming during a time when homosexuality was harshly criminalized.
