Uva ursi is an evergreen shrub that grows in rocky, mountainous soil and arctic and subarctic climates. Because bears enjoy eating its red berries, it is commonly known as bearberry, which was translated into Latin for its botanical name of uva ursi. Although uva ursi grows in arctic areas all around the north pole, it is most well-known for its medicinal and ritual use by Native Americans, who blended uva ursi with tobacco and other herbs and barks to make a smoking mixture called kinnikinnick. Uva ursi can be placed in a sachet to increase psychic power and confidence. It can also be used as incense, tea, or a bath during divination, journeying, or ancestor work.
