Hawthorn is a thorny tree or shrub in the rose family. Its leaves, deep red berries, and May-blooming flowers are used in traditional herbalism as a cardiovascular tonic, so the tree has an affinity for work with the heart–use it in spells focused on self-love and healing heartbreak and grief. In Scottish and Irish folklore, hawthorn has long been associated with the fae and is known to mark the entrance to the otherworld. It can be used in a tea or a bath to open pathways for otherworld journeying.
