St. John’s Wort is a perennial, native to Europe and is harvested around the summer solstice. It’s said when St. John’s Wort is gathered on a Friday or Midsummer and then worn, it will ward off sickness, both physical and mental. When carried it can be beneficial for courage, strength, and helping with one's will while facing difficult times or situations. Not only is it beneficial for spiritual protection it is also used for purification of the home. When placed on a windowsill it can protect against lightning, strong storms and evil spirits, while hanging it from windows can protect the home from evil spirits, ghosts, and negativity. Burning St. John’s Wort is also said to have purification and protection properties and was commonly used in exorcisms. Placing the herb under a pillow of a single woman is said to induce dreams of their future husband. An old Welsh tradition was to hang a sprig of St. John’s Wort for each member of the family on Midsummer, and the degree of wilting the next day would tell how soon a family member would die, and tell the state of health one was in.
