Lapis Lazuli was discovered over 6500 years ago, making it one of the oldest opaque gemstones.
It gets its name from two cultures; Lapis being the Latin word for “stone” and Lazuli coming from the Persian word “lazhuward” which means blue.
It’s not an element or a single mineral but is typically composed of mica, lazurite, feldspar, calcite, and pyrite. In ancient Egypt, it was powdered and worn around the eyes to improve eyesight as well as in makeup, as made popular by Cleopatra. It was also used in the death mask of Tutankhamen, along with turquoise and carnelian.
Lapis Lazuli is associated with strength, courage, royalty, and wisdom. It can also assist in speaking one's truth and helps to inspire confidence. Lapis is connected to the Throat chakra as well as the Third Eye chakra, aiding in communication and intuition respectively.
